Fancy a chocolate protein smoothie but don’t want the banana? Go seasonal! Add small frozen florets of cauliflower instead! Almond milk, raw cacao powder and pea protein round this drink off nicely!

This is such a treat and yet so good for you! Here’s a few tips, tricks and pointers to make this recipe really easy, simple and fast to make…
GET PREPARED
When I get my shopping home or find there’s some old produce that’s about to go off, I like to wash, cut up and store produce I’ll want for smoothies into reusable bags in the freezer. The beauty of having fruit and vegetables set ready in your freezer means, whenever you want a smoothie your ingredients will make you a cold refreshing drink straight away! Frozen produce also gives smoothies a thicker, cooler and more sorbet like texture. Which works wonders in a chocolate flavoured one!
HAVE YOUR FLAVOURS WORKING TOGETHER
I’ve added maple syrup to this recipe as cacao powder by itself can have a strong bitter taste. Then make sure to add some sea salt to help bring out the sweetness of the maple syrup, meaning you don’t have to put as much sweetener in!
FIND A HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN
When protein smoothies are made up with fruit and vegetables sometimes they can ramp up our blood sugar levels, leaving us to feel hungry a couple of hours later. Yes that hanger mood!
Solution? Find a high quality protein powder and add a nice heaped tablespoon of it per drink. This will help you to stay fuller for long, feel increasingly energised and help your body to reap all of it’s benefits.
DON’T FORGET A HEALTHY FAT
And lastly, make sure you’ve got some healthy fats in there too, in this case coconut oil. It’s not only our meals we want to balance out, but our drinks as well! Our brains are nearly 60% fat so it’s highly recommended to include a good healthy fat in everything we eat, to keep it ticking away long and strong! You could also add a nut butter for some healthy fats and gives an even creamier texture.
Have along side these gooey Apple Peanut Butter and Oat Cookies for a refuel after a workout.
